A BRIEF HISTORY OF HILL COUNTY AND HILLSBORO
EARLY SETTEMENT
Hill County was created in 1853 from a separation of our
eastern neighbor, Navarro County. It was a wilderness
populated by small bands of Indians, horse soldiers, bear,
antelope, buffalo, wild horses, and deer. Government forts
were established to suppress hostile Indian activity in the area.
One of these, Fort Graham, was supervised by Major Arnold,
the famous Texas soldier and founder of Fort Worth.
This area was settled by strong-hearted pioneer folk who saw
the value of the cross timber region as a natural resource for
supplying timber for homes and good soil conducive to cotton production.
The abundant natural artesian wells were attractive to both early
settlers and native Indians, such as the Cherokees, Comanches
and the friendly Kickapoos.
